Do you have one? Do your children have one? Do you know anyone who has one? Because I kind of want a DSI but I don't know if I actually want to buy one. Yanno?

So tell me about it, with as much detail as possible.

The chicklets each have one. What I have learned is that DS =/= DSi. As in, if I call it a DS, I get smacked down. "It's not a DS, Mom, it's a DSi!!"

I know DS means Dual Screen. The kids play games on them. The DSi has the additional features of limited internet access, a built-in camera... I know they can use the pencil-thing to draw little cartoons that they can animate into videos. I have no idea how they do it, but I've seen them, and they end up being hilarious.

I know if you have a DSi, you can communicate to other DSi's - share videos you've made, interact on games, etc, but I don't know how it works. I thought you had to be physically near each other, but that might be for the DS. I think the DSi allows internet-based interaction, like you can see strangers' videos...?

I'm sorry. I'm not much help. Oh! I do know you can get them less expensively by purchasing a refurbished one, like at Gamestop.

Thanks!

Are you and they happy with how it all works? Like the quality of all the features and such

I haven't ever used it, so I don't have a personal opinion of it. The kids seem to love theirs. My involvement extends to helping look for the charger when it's missing... same with the pencil-thing (stylus?).

I think their only complaint is the limited nature of internet access. I don't really understand how that part works - I was really surprised that they have *any* internet access. Apparently they are able to do their online honors homework on the DSi, because they can access the school's website on it. ??? But they've complained about other things they can't access. As we have computers at home which they can use, I haven't been the least bit interested in helping them get more access or finding out why some things can be accessed and some cannot on the DSi. (I think they can't get YouTube and the Webkinz site, if I recall.) And there's no actual keyboard or anything... I think a small digital keyboard appears on one of the two screens, and you have to use the pencil-thing to poke at the letters to tap out whatever you're trying to spell. Which, for me, yuck - this is why I hate texting, don't have anything like an iPhone, etc. But the kids don't seem to mind, so each to her own.

Oh! You can put stickers on it. The kids love doing that. They also really enjoy Cooking Mama, and SpongeBob Globs of Doom. In case it matters. ;) They also recommend the aqua-colored DSi. (The colors don't affect gameplay, but they do affect how tweens squee over them.) There are also a frillion "skins" to wrap the DS/DSi in, in case you want a pattern/design.

I am buying my kids a DS Lite soon for the trip to Hawaii, so we've done a lot of research between that an the DSi. The DSi has a camera, which you might need to have for certain games. It seems like a great thing, but I've honestly never heard of an adult using one so I don't know...? Aren't most of the games for kids?

Oh, I hadn't thought about that. Maybe? Is there an adult version of such a thing out there? I mostly like the idea of a small portable internet.

I never thought about using the DSi for internet access only. The screen is small for internet use (3" x 2.5"). If that's all you're buying it for, you might look for something a little bigger...? Or something like an internet tablet?

I have a DS which is the version less than the DSi and I love it to bits. I take it with me everywhere and play games at lunchtime. I have Lego Rock Band and Lego Batman (see where this is going?) and I'm going to buy the Lego Harry Potter soon. I also have the Brain games and the cooking school one and it's an awesome way to keep yourself amused on a ferry or a plane. HAVE I MENTIONED I'M 40 YEARS OLD?

The DSi has wi-fi and a bunch of things that make it better than the Ds but if you're going to be using it for teh internets, get some sort of small laptop or something because it's a game system, not an internet system.

There's a newer DSi that's going to be coming out this month (March 28) which will have a larger screen and a whole bunch of added crap for not too much more than the one that's currently on the market. I don't have a DSi yet (had been planning to get one with tax refund, but that idea's screwed), but youngest brother does. He likes it. The only thing i didn't like about his was the way the plastic felt under my fingers. It felt... I don't know, not as smooth as my DS?

http://www.nintendods.com/meet-dsi-xl.jsp that's the details on the newer one

I have one--I asked for it for Xmas because I am a child. ;-)

I got it because I had games on my phone but then my phone went and reset itself and dumped all my games.

I would suggest that you do your research on any games you're interested in before buying them (see: http://www.gamespot.com/ds/index.html). And then I would suggest buying them used at GameStop. But make sure you check the little thingies on the back to make sure they're clean and the plastic ridges are in good shape (said from experience). Also, if you do get one and you go to GameSTop, pay the $10 and get the discount/membership card--it's totally worth it...of course I have a Wii too, so...

I've noticed that after thirty minutes or so of playing a game that requires the stylus my elbow starts to ache and my tendinitis kicks in. Oi repetitive motion.

I have the following games:
Scrabble
Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box
Brain Age 1
Kingdom Hearts
Battleship/Connect Four/Sorry/Trouble
SimCity Creator

I'm currently in the middle of Zelda, which I really like. I played all of PLDB--it's basically a bunch of little puzzles connected by a story. SimCity Creator is old-school, but fun - though not very visually interesting. Brain Age is interesting, but for some reason the game won't recongize my voice (one I bought used), so there's a few of the puzzles that don't work for me.

The only other people I know with one are my nephews and they don't play the same games I do, so the connect-ability between gadgets doesn't really do me much good. Though I haven't really thought to go online as yet...

Here's a comparison of DS vs DSi: http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/DS/Nintendo+DSi/feature.asp?c=9274

I have a DS Lite and I've considered upgrading to the DSi but really the only noteable difference to me is the camera, and I'm just not sure I need a camera on my portable game system. It's got a bigger screen too, I guess, but I'm pretty okay with the size of the DS Lite's. As far as games go, the DS is pretty awesome as far as a wide variety of games. There's a lot of children's games but there's also some fun more adult stuff too. Just depends on what you play.

Hmm for small portable internet I greatly prefer the ipod touch. I think it has a better range. I love my DS Lite and my ipod touch but when it came down to choosing which to replace (first broke after 4 years of hard use, latter got stolen) I ultimately went with the ipod touch rather than getting a DSi. The camera on it isn't great, I'd have to get a new emulator for games, and like I said the internet isn't as stable.

DSi is all the rage with the tweenies, but if you are looking for portable internet, an iphone or a googlephone is probably your answer.. the screen is bigger, and the connection and the functionality are awesome, and the touchscreen is pretty addictive :)

My younger brother has a Nintendo DS. He's chewed the little stick thing to the point where it can no longer be used as a stick thing.
