Actually, he should have a straight arrow spine during the exercise in the first picture. It doesn't matter how far you can bend if you don't actually move the muscles that exercise is meant to move.

Also in pic number one, his knees should be closer to the floor. Reasons are the same as before. (There's a FOOT under one knee ffs!)
