Because everyone, their uncle, and their uncle's mail delivery person's spouse has read The Hunger Games, I thought that I would too.

I'm just a few chapters into the story and it's good but so far it remind me of a more elaborate and perhaps more extreme and obviously longer version of The Lottery

I'm not sure when we had to read The Lottery either elementary or HS. What did you have to do after reading it?

I can't remember. I'm sure I read it in one of my English classes. I probably had to write a paper?

You should re-create that paper. :p

I enjoyed the series (though not the last book quite as much) but I totally thought The Lottery, too. I've also heard Battle Royale but as I'm not familiar I can't confirm.

Good. Glad, that I am not the only one. I've never heard of this Battle Royale

It's a Japanese manga, I think (or maybe an anime? one of them. I know it's Japanese media).

It was originally a Japanese novel by Koushun Takami. A few years after its release, the author wrote a manga based on the novel. He considers the novel to be a companion piece to the book because the book was light on character development, focusing more on the politics and violence of the situation. The manga is ALL character development. The two movies that were made are ... eh. I thought the first one was okay, but they played hell with the ending and made it ridiculous. The sequel was ... not needed. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

Sorry, it's just BR is one of my favorite books. I read it once a year. I adore the manga. And I wish everyone would read it and the novel for the full experience.

It reminded me of The Lottery too THG frequently gets read over here, probably second to Harry Potter. I'm not too keen on book 3 but book 2 of THG is on par with book 1. (Says the girl who read all 3 in 2 days). Also THG reminded me of Survivor at points.

Gosh, it'll probably take me awhile to read them. I've very bad at reading non-fanfiction.

Well, I was going to say 'Good on you' however after learning that you have read Battle Royale, I think that you should read The Hunger Games and see if you see any resemblance.

I'm looking forward to the meaty part of the story.

Ohmygod The Lottery. The film version of that traumatized me in the eighth grade and I will never forget it. And yep, I was totally reminded of it too.

I didn't know there was a film version! Was it a short or did they drag it out?

It was a short film. I think it might have been this version but I've honestly tried to block out as much of it as I could; I didn't really like my 8th grade english teacher even before we watched it and after I just haaaated her. Because I'm pretty sure we didn't read the story first, and I don't think she told us anything about the video. It was horrible.

It sounds like it'd be a pretty terrible/horrible movie.

My friend just loaned me her copies of the books. She raved about them, so I decided to give them a try.

How are you liking it? I'm still where I was before, I'm so very lazy when it comes to reading stuff that isn't fanfiction.
