But I thought Ian Thorpe's there, I saw an interview a couple of days ago, he got all dressed up and everything

I don't get the Phelps hype, I think he's a bit of an idiot *shrugs8

I don't think Thorpe is there, I've not read anything on my flist and I'm sure I would have - cos I remember the spazzing from years past.

I don't get the hype either.

I find Phelps to be really ugly and while that may make me extremely shallow, I don't care. I just ... No. He swims well, obviously but meh. I wanna hear talk, watch clips and look at pictures of a pretty boy.

He's like all officially retired now, right? Or is he just taking a break and is going to make a come back real soon?

Other people have answered this by now, but yeah, I saw him tonight and flailed and hand-waved ... and then he kissed Phelps's mom when they celebrated his bazillionth medal, and, you know, BOO. BOO TO YOU, PHELPS.

I don't like Phelps. I have no reason to not like him, but I just don't. He annoys me. Sure, I've only really seen photos of him and maybe I've seen him swim once or twice - I don't actually know and I'm fairly sure that I've never seen him talk or really read/heard anything he's said and yet he annoys me. *nods*

Was his form and performance better than Phelps?

Well, no, not really, although Thorpe did beat him in their one Olympic showdown, the 200 in Athens. Phelps (heh, it's so weird to do that) has to be considered one of the greatest swimmers ever, not because he wins or even because he wins by so much, but because he wins everything by so much, so many different strokes. Thorpe was just a freestyler, but I swam 200 and 400, and I still remember sitting in English class in grade 10 where my friend came back from a big meet in the States and told me about this 14-year-old Australian kid who swam the 400 in under 3:50, and I just stared and stared at her because as if that was possible. I admire what Phelps is doing and I feel privileged that I get to witness it, but I guess I don't feel, like . . . a personal connection with him like I do with Thorpe. I love Ian Thorpe, the only one ahead of him in my heart is Popov.

Thorpedo is actually in Beijing watching the games. He couldn't probably still compete if he wanted to.

Phelps is a great swimmer and all, but my god the hype about him is getting dull. NBC is jerking off at the sight of him. One of the NBC commentators yesterday compared him to Tiger Woods. Yeah, because you CAN compare a swimmer and a golfer.

I'm also convinced Phelps has gills behind those hug ears of his. Man do they stick out. He's really dorky looking and needs to fix his teeth. I love swimmer bodies, and his body is pretty tight... but it's almost too much body, ya know?

That is freaking ridiculous.

Phelps is damn ugly and I agree with you about his body.

There are a few other American swimmers who are much hotter. Lochte for one.

I've never heard of him but his name is close to Locke so for that alone, I like him. For now.

I miss the Thorpe/Phelps rivalry. It's kinda less fun if Phelps wins every one of his events by half a pool length.

Thorpie retired in 2006 (at 24, after a 10-year pro career *g*) because he was no longer motivated to compete. Now he's just a good sort about the place, started a philanthropic society and everything. Thorpe is so great. *sighs wistfully* I miss him, but I'm sorta glad he retired while he was still BEST EVER and Michael Phelps never got to beat him at the Olympics, heh heh heh.

Oh, hell no. :P

If Thorpe is there it's because of Pieter van den Hoogenband ... who I believe is there. I hope is there.

van den Hoogenband is there, he came fifth in the 100 last night/this morning and promptly retired.
