But aren't they called koala bears? I thought they were called that, not trying to imply that they're BEARS but yeah.

'Koala' comes from Dharuk gula. When first adopted by English speakers, the name 'Koala bear' became popular, as this roughly evoked the species' appearance. While taxonomically inaccurate, 'Koala bear' is commonly accepted parlance. Its scientific genus Phascolarctos is from Greek, phaskolos "pouch" and arktos "bear". Its species name, cinereus, is Latin and means "ash-colored."
