I have a couple times just to see what a person sounds like, but really I'd rather read what you have to say.

Yaoi is the Japanese word for boy/boy stuff. Or at least that's the general idea. I forget the term for girl/girl.

When people say bandom are they referring to the fandom of bands like My Chemical Romance and the like?

oooh. okay.

Yaoi is a Japanese publishing genre that focuses on male/male homosexual relationships aimed at a female audience. In anime fandom and the internet it has pretty much come to mean m/m slash in animeland.

I almost never listen to voice posts. I have once or twice to hear what people sound like but unless it's Refur doing "Mpreg theater" or something insane like that I'd rather read.

I agree about the glee think. Without new eps of SPN our fandom has degenerated into WankLand. Hopefully Thursday's episode will bring the glee.

I love voice posts, they're so entertaining!

Bandom is very, very fun! :D

Someone should do a Penn Badgley picspam. I would be down with that.

I find when I listen to them that I don't really listen, my mind wanders and then it's over and I don't have the energy to listen to it again.

Sometimes I'd like to get into bandom but so far, it does nothing for me. :/

I think there was a Penn picspam, but I could be wrong. If there was I've no idea where.

They are only gleey because it's all fresh and exciting to them. They will soon be wanking over who looks best in eyeliner and if there is such a thing as too sparkly pants.

Generally I kinda think that wank means people cares. *shrugs* I mean we get into it and call each other names over the dumbest shit because we all love our boys but in different ways. (Besides after sitting in on one staff meeting I have come to the conclusion that fandom knows NOTHING of wank.)

I rarely listen to voice posts either. Just every now and then to hear someone's voice. I like the written word or I wouldn't be on here. Besides, I'm all miffed because I can't make them. :0P

lyra_wing was talking about doing a yaoi J2 fic which would be fab.
There used to be a great site with scans of the yaoi manga 'Fake' and I was going to link you to it but I've just discovered it's gone! Shit!

We may have to call you Sandra from now on.

Ha. I was wondering how so many people I didn't know found my poll.

Bandom is hilarious! I feel no shame for liking it anymore. I don't know if that is good or bad.

Actually, I think it's a pretty old fandom. My Chemical Romance has been around since 2002 and Fall Out Boy has been around for 4 or 5 years. I think it's just gotten BIGGER over the last two years because of all the baby bands springing up out of Fall Out Boys pants or something. But yeah. It's just kind of wank free.

I think that's partly because it's ALL RPS, so there's no holier than thou types running around telling people how they shouldn't write it. It's also mostly boys and they wear EYELINER so I mean... they kind of bring the slash on themselves. :P

It's also strangely pro female. Everyone likes the girlfriends and the women in the bands. I know of two wanks in that fandom, one having to do with whether or not Patrick Stump is drinking a beer in a picture (it was mostly considered ridiculous) and the other was started by an SPN person actually. :D It was about whether or not the "stage gay" the bands have going is insulting to people who are actually gay. Because this girl is actually gay and she took offense to them making out on stage and then going home to their wives and girlfriends.

So, don't jinx us Jey!

From: [identity profile] jeyhawk.livejournal.com
Would I do that? *looks innocent*

I just meant it was new to most of the SPN people falling for its shine. :0) The truth is some fandoms are just nicer and less... opiniated. *g*

Oh yes, there was name-calling, getting into wild fights where both sides said the exact same thing but just failed to recognize it, general sneering, back-stabbing, trash talking of the temps, martyrs and of course a few lectures from the crazy boss-woman.

I'm scarred for life and they have one every month. *g*

...I have a shameful soft spot for yaoi. It just. You have to have a different set of standards. I would love something in yaoi that I would never tolerate from a western author. It's just it's own subculture.

My theory was always that it was a question of size. Like all fandoms are wank free when they are new and shiny and once they have grown to a certain size... only that there are some tiny fandoms that can be rather vicious and insane too.... Hmm.

I still think that maybe certain cooling off periods have something to do with it. If the fandom is new and shiny everybody is happy and busy exporing everything. As soon as everything has set in, some of the original shine has been lost, once people have comfortably settling into their positions of power, they suddenly have time to wank about the dumbest things.

Yaoi is an actually an acronym, standing for 'Yami nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi' which, translated into English from Japanese, means, 'No climax, no resolution, no meaning.' It's the term used to cover a certain type of manga (Japanese comics) genre.

Basically, yaoi would be the buttsexing of pritty Japanese boys.

This first time I read yaoi, it freaked me out. The dominant gender roles (despite being a same-sex couple), the explicit threats/jokes of rape, the romaticized victimization, and the plot cliches, to name a few. My western, educated feminist self was having the critical theory equivalent of "zomg, wtf?" But the more I read, the more I understood the conventions and the culture of yaoi. It's like a became a different person when I read yaoi. Probably not unlike how my standards for fanfic are different from my standards when I read literature of my choice, or the literature I was exposed to in school. It just demands a different kind of audience.
