I don't remember Dean showing remorse not back then anyway and I thought that Sam looked a bit torn up when he was blasting Lilith.
I thought Sam's motivation was to prove that he wasn't a freak but also to carry Dean's cross. Maybe not. Probably not. I'm often wrong.
