Lost icons. Ripping video. CSI: CSI

Where do you get your good Lost icons from?

* * *

Let's say that you've downloaded a movie or a tv show. And you want to snip out a few minute clip of it to keep. What free, very easy to use program might one use? I used to have uhm ... something. Yeah, I don't remember what I used to have so I guess I should just end this sentence right about here. Or here. Wait, that's a second sentence and this is a third, shit.

Also, if possible this program should save things as the size they should be. I mean, the program I used before would cut out a two minute clip and it'd be about 50mb and that's not right. NOT RIGHT AT ALL, ya'll.

Yes. Pleh, please.

Hodges' version of an alcholic Brass was the funniest thing ever.  "No, I choose life." It's still making me giggle. And then this recent one with, [slightly paraphrased] "We can't do anything, they've layered up."  is making me laugh. A lot.

Why do I find it so funny? I don't know.

This is probably an extremely ghetto way to do it, but hey, if you just want a few minutes or so, then so be it. Use movie maker (or if you have a mac, whatever free movie editing program it comes with) and then clip out what you want and make a new video with just those clips. If you have the right settings, it'll be just the right size too.

I hadn't thought about that at all but I tried it after reading the comment and I have no idea how to use movie maker. :/ I tried to open up the video I want to clip a part out of and it said it couldn't be opened because some codec thing was wrong or missing or something. Boo.

But I love this suggestion, I'll have to try it with something else.

i use kmplayer. it's a little different in the new version, it took me a while to figure it out.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Whaaaa? You can clip parts out using kmplayer? How? Details, please.

[livejournal.com profile] buyo105 and i were just talking about this the other day, so i am just going to copy from our conversation because i am lazy:

if you right click and go under capture, does yours say frame extract or i think the old one said something simpler like screen capture or frame capture? it was something that made you think you were grabbing screen caps anyway. if it's frame extract - i usually pick continuously under numbers to extract and then under frames to extract the button under every frame where it's got the options for how many + every # frame, otherwise it'll grab a billion.

And this also 'captures' sound?

[identity profile] sevenandthree.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
it should, if i am not mistaken.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-28 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if I right click on kmplayer nothing happens. I'm thinking I have something different downloaded.

The only Lost icon I've ever had is this one because its very pretty and other than Sawyer, my favorite characters never seem to get iconized well. This one is just a general "hey look, that girl likes Lost." So um...yeah, no help. I know [livejournal.com profile] mediocrechick makes quirky icons, many of which are Lost.

Thanks, I'll check out her stuff

I use virtual dub-it's dead easy but also really accurate and good-I know a lot of people who use it.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
All right, once I've downloaded and unizipped virtual dub ... what do I do next?

[identity profile] kali1967.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
If you open up the file, skip along to the bit you want. I think it's automatically set up so that the arrow keys skip ahead/backwards by one frame at a time, which is handy. At the bottom there's a row of keys, the two on the right are the ones you want-if you hover over them, they should say mark in and mark out. Click mark in where you want the bit to begin and mark out where you want it to end, and then it's file> save segmented .avi

I hope that helps and if not, lemme know :D

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yah, I tried opening the file up and it wouldn't open it. :/

[identity profile] kali1967.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
Not at all? Sometimes it'll give me a warning box but if I hit okay it opens fine. If not, then I've got no clue-is it just a standard avi file you're using?

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-28 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it was just a standard avi file. I'll give it a try again sometime.

I rec NANDUB --> http://ndub.sourceforge.net/

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2010-04-26 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Which one should I download? And after, I download I may come back with more questions.

[identity profile] zsuness.livejournal.com 2010-04-27 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
This one: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ndub/nandub-binary-1.0rc2.rar

After it's downloaded, you should extract everything that's in the rar into a new folder and then all you have to do is starting the program with nandub.exe (so no need for installation).

I kinda forgot to tell you though that NANDUB can only handle avi files.

If you want to work with flv, ts, mp4, whatever (and avi, too), you should get Avidemux. I'm still experimenting with this one but just like NANDUB, this can save both image sequences (which is handy for making gifs) and you can also save scenes as video.

You can download Avidemux here: http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/download.html
