The Avengers

I'm looking forward to this movie. Not as excited as some but some what yeee about it.

But. I don't know who they are.

Okay, I've seen Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. I've enjoyed them. I know the Hulk. But the others not so much.

What I mean is, I don't know the history of them, I never read the comics and what not.

I'm looking forward to seeing a good action flick.

But what I'm most excited about? Joss Whedon.

It fills me with stupid glee that Joss is involved. And yes, I'm aware that it'll be nothing like Buffy, Angel, Firefly or Dollhouse or any other thing that I might associate him with.

But still.

It's Joss.

And I love him.

I have seen Iron Man (but not the second)
I have seen Thor, but not Captain America.
I feel like I need to see these before I can see the Avengers.

Comic book movies fill me with GLEE.

(Also, JOSS WHEDON)

Hmm, I'm not sure if I've seen the second Iron Man, I don't think so.

Comic book movies are pretty awesome. Especially when they are good. Though at the moment I can't really think of any bad ones.

You should at least watch Captain America. It's pretty great. And Iron Man 2 was next to useless except to let you know who Samuel L. Jackson is and why he wants Tony to join the Avengers.

I say this as someone that has seen all the movies, read some of the comics, and watched all the cartoons because I'm a giant dork like that.

IM2 also introduced fans to Natasha/Black Widow.

[identity profile] earlofcardigans.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I love Natasha. I think maybe that new clip of her might be enough of an introduction if someone decides they don't want to watch the movie.

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
One of my favorite parts of IM2 was the ultimate ass-whooping she put down near the end at Hammer Industries. But I didn't think IM2 was that bad. I like watching Tony hit bottom then climb up again.

[identity profile] earlofcardigans.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
She is amazing.

And I like IM2. I rewatched it just the other day (thanks, netflix), so it's obviously up to people to determine if they want to invest time in all the movies or just go watch The Avengers and have fun with what's there.

It's hard not to love Joss. BTW: I love you, too (and way more)!

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2012-04-04 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's just neat because I love you way more than Joss. And I love him quite a bit.

[identity profile] citibyrd.livejournal.com 2012-04-04 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
YES, THIS EXACTLY. (Except for the part where I've only seen Thor so far....I should probably actually watch a few of the lead up movies, huh?)

I don't know if one needs to see the other movies before The Avengers.

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'd probably watch Captain America. Not only because it was just a fucking good adaptation of his comic, but Cap's mindset will only make sense if you've seen how he evolved.

[identity profile] citibyrd.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh thanks for the tip! I will do my best to see it before The Avengers comes out. (And hopefully some of the others, as well!)

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
The only one I'm not sure if you should bother with is The Hulk. I know it's considered the canon for the movie-verse version of the character, but after all of the casting shake-ups - Ruffalo in for Norton - it's hard to say if they'll reference that one much, if at all. Then again, Hulk's pretty iconic. Probably the most iconic on that team, rivaling Cap in recognizability with a non-comics fan, so most folks have a good idea of how Hulk came to be.

[identity profile] citibyrd.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Good to know! I wanna see that one eventually because I love Edward Norton, but perhaps I'll wait til after The Avengers for that one if I don't end up having time.

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
It was a great movie. The best Hulk adaptation. Edward Norton was amazing. But he always is. He's my second favorite actor. :)

[identity profile] citibyrd.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome! He's definitely one of my very favorites, too. :)

[identity profile] earlofcardigans.livejournal.com 2012-04-04 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's important to have seen them all to enjoy their collective movie. If you have questions, you can ask me.

I am also really excited about Joss being involved. I read an interview with him the other day and my heart was all full.

[identity profile] bitterbird.livejournal.com 2012-04-04 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Joss is Boss! I am looking forward to seeing his take on these characters :)

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
The only characters involved with the team that we haven't seen solo movies on are Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow and Clint Barton aka Hawkeye. I know they said they're eventually going to do Black Widow and I'm sure Hawkeye will prove popular enough to get a movie, too. I mean, it's Jeremy Renner. He can carry a movie.

I fully admit I don't know as much as I should about the Avengers-verse and I AM a comics reader. I've read some Iron Man stuff, but only what Warren Ellis did, because it's Warren Ellis, and I only saw Cap and anyone else involved with The Avengers via storyline crossovers with X-Men and The Runaways. I haven't noticed it as much in the last ten years, but Marvel used to have these LONG overarcing SLs where it involved numerous character titles. If you didn't read one title, you'd miss some part of the story. The only exposure I've had to Thor's characters was via the New Mutants in the 80s and 90s, when those characters ended up in Thor's world and crazy shit happened.

You'll probably get more of Joss's shows than you'd think in this movie. I read some of the stuff he wrote for The Astonishing X-Men (I hated his run on The Runaways because he basically turned every kid on that team into some alternate of a Scooby Gang Member) and he had the same wit and charm of his show dialogue in the characters but they were still in character. This man made me LIKE Kitty Pryde, for fuck's sake, I couldn't fucking stand her before he wrote the character.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
He is talented. :)

But. I thought he was just directing the movie. Did he have a hand in writing it?

ps. Who is Black Widow and where does she come from?

[identity profile] donna-c-punk.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
She's a member of SHIELD. She's had a long and varied history within the comics, too. She appeared in the second Iron Man movie. Scarlett Johanssen played her. I can't remember a lot of details about her - since I haven't read her character in comic form in, like, seven or eight years - but here's a bio: http://marvel.com/universe/Black_Widow_%28Natasha_Romanova%29. I have no idea how much they've changed in the movie-verse, since they apparently cut some of her footage in IM2 that was supposed to have explained more about her.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
ok. nm.

Just saw that he wrote the screenplay.

[identity profile] agt-league.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm super duper excited for The Avengers. Should be amazingggggggg :)

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping it is

[identity profile] sonicbookmark.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'd be excited for this movie even if Joss wasn't involved, but him being the director makes it extra special.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I'd be excited but I'd be "oh, that looks like a fun movie" but yes. Joss does it make it extra special.

[identity profile] vunadiwai.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read the comics either. Loved Thor, Iron Man was good, not impressed with Captain America. I liked Eric Bana's Hulk.

Didn't know Joss was involved. Interesting...

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2012-04-09 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that Joss was just directing but then I learned that he also wrote the screenplay. And that thrills me.
