The letters Joyce wrote to Nora Barnacle, as I understand it, were quite filthy. Often in an unpleasant way. Hence, Kate Beaton's reaction in the comic.

Although, I don't find them that off-putting (compared to other folks 'round the net). I mean, you can't say they didn't have passion for one another.
