out and about

Went out for Chinese food with my aunt and a couple of her friends. There was a monk there (my aunt knew him from somewhere, not sure where - said that his name was Brother John), I was up getting some food and he was there beside me and said "Those are good, aren't they?" I said, 'Yes.'  ... So, now. Now, I've been blessed. *nods* Because when a monk (and/or a nun) speak to you it TOTALLY counts as being blessed.  Okay, so maybe it doesn't but I'm saying it does.

Brother John was wearing a white robe, which on tv and in the movies they always seem to be wearing brown ones. I kind of wonder what the difference is.

I think it depends what order of monk you are. Cappuchin monks always wear brown. It's the same Italian root word as we have for Cappuchin (I may be spelling that wrong) monkeys (also brown) and cappuccino (the coffee). I think Franciscans also wear brown, Dominicans wear grey and evil tv monks wear black. I'm thinking white might be more ceremonial because it sounds kind of very impractical for day to day. Especially if you're clumsy with the chopsticks. White robe with dumpling stains doesn't sound that awesome. :D

LMAO it totally counts!

My parents and me went into St Patrick's church in NYC and I touched the holy water and made my dad touch it and we were blessed that way too *nods*

I have no clue what the difference is...

You know, as soon as I hit the "monk" part I went back and re-read to see if you were describing a dream. ;)

your tag is making me giggle like a giggly thing.

There is a type of monk under the Order of St. Benedict who wears a white robe. But I'm not sure of the connotation. Still, I think it safe to say if you feel you were blessed, then you certainly were. I studied under a Franciscan and that was his personal standard for being blessed. If that makes any difference.

*smishes you 'cuz hasn't seen you online in a coon's age*

According to my recent research, Carmelite monks wear white. Franciscans wear grey (ei, greyfriars) and Dominicans wear black (blackfriars). I was actually looking this up because I was wondering why "Blackfriars" in London was named tha. But anyway, go you, blessed by a monk!

What were you and the monk eating?

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-07-12 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I was getting some uh ... I can't think of the name but a small bun type thing with a vanilla icing to drizzle over the top of it.

My brother in law is a Buddhist monk, and he's an asshole. I wish he wouldn't talk to me at all.

Just thought you should know. :D
