Mpreg fiction

For those that dislike/hate/loathe mpreg fiction in whatever fandom you read in, do you just hate written mpreg fiction? Or do also dislike/hate/loathe movies like Junior. What about the tv show Alien Nation where the men would give birth? Or is that different because they were aliens? How about the episode of the Cosby Show where all the men were pregnant and gave birth to weird things like sandwiches and a blimp of orange soda? And I think a model boat was involved too. Sure, it was a dream but still. Mpreg.

Can I ASK anymore questions? Apparently, yes.

ASSBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABIES. ♥

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Right?! Beautiful and completely NATURAL.

[identity profile] lemmealone.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh. NOW I SEE.

To answer, I'm not fond of pregnancy as a fanfic trope full stop, male or female. Because it's all about ME, and pregnancy is not something I identify with, and also I don't really like kids. That said, I'm not morally outraged by it or anything and I've read a couple in various fandoms that I've really enjoyed. *g*

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, interesting and thank you. That perspective isn't one I had thought of before.

I'm not like ZOMG AGAINST IT or anything, it's just not something I get into. I think because (in fic) it interferes with the manliness of the manly men I'm reading about. Oh noes, does that make me sexist? ;p

I remember really enjoying that episode of the Cosby Show, however.

[identity profile] kilynn16.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I also REALLY hated Junior.

[identity profile] notthebigspoon.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have any problem with it morally, it's for me that it's usually so poorly done. And as a result of that, I avoid it as best I can. There's occasionally one that I'll find that I can read and enjoy, but it's usually as rec.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been lucky so far to only read good ones or at least good ones in the Supernatural Fandom.

[identity profile] winterweathered.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
It used to bug me because we're writing about men and they should be allowed to be men. It seems so bizarre to me to take something so fundamentally female and apply it to a guy - if you want to write about someone getting pregnant, why don't you write about a woman? I don't know. The whole idea that the point of romance and sex is procreation is just so archaic to me.

And no, Junior didn't bother me because it was a ridiculous comedy and because it wasn't about a gay relationship. LET THE GAY MEN BE GAY MEN. DO NOT GIVE THEM A WOMB PLEASE.

ANYWAY, it doesn't bother me anymore because it's less prevalent, and also because [livejournal.com profile] memphis86 is brilliant.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh, okay.

[identity profile] affectingly.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
I do not have strong feelings about assbabies. I will read about assbabies if it is rec'd to me, but I generally find hollywood's version of assbabies to be stupid and contrived and sexist [omg, look at this dude who is learning what it's like to be a WOMAN because giving birth is what it MEANS to be a WOMAN...whatever].

But I do love fic where my favorite characters have children, so if that happens because of assbabies...whatever. But that in and of itself is weird now that I think about it, me reading fic about my favorite characters having babies - not the assbabies part, because *I* don't want any kids of my own, period. Kids are great, so long as they're not waking me up or making me pay attention to them when I could be reading about assbabies on the internet.

:)

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, bad fic of any sort is well, bad. And add in assbabies it could make it even worse.

[identity profile] popmusicjunkie.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it's not the mpreg that squicks me out.
It's the mpreg birthing process that makes me run the other way.
Especially when assbabies and/or mysterious manginas suddenly appear.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha. Yeah, I try not to think about THAT part too much.

[identity profile] laurondo.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
You just reminded me about this Big Bang fic I forgot I was going to read.

:) You are welcome.

[identity profile] ellipsisblack.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
For me, that's easy: yep, mpreg creeps me out irrespective of the medium. --;

Except aliens, because the creepiness there is probably more about the alien factor than the man factor. Heh.

Um.. I usually automatically stay away from any fic by unknown author that contains pregnancy, babies, young children, references to parenting... not because I am in any way against those things happening to fictional characters of any gender, but because I dislike the way most people write it, with extreme overload of endearments and the standard approach of "doctor knows best" and ultrasounds and hospitals, and "birth is horribly painful", and then cribs/formula/daycare... I am a fan of non-standard approach to things, and lots of thought given to "why" and "what's really best" and not a fan of incessant cooing *shrug*

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That's understandable.

[identity profile] memphis86.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think people that write mpreg are evil. Cast out those devils from yon fandom.

I am such a bitch.

Well, I dislike MOST MPREG because it's SO unrealistic. You want to write it then do the research. No, you don't start having swollen ankles in your second week, going into labor after week 36 is not early or risky at all. No, your emotions aren't so wacky that you'll cry every 2 seconds. In fact most of the times, you will live a normal, healthy life. Hell I was better during my pregnancies than at other times. However most MPREG turn into major drama for no reason.

Writers should concentrate on the emotional aspects than the medical ones because they tend to fuck them up.

Having said that, the same rule will apply to any other movie/story/tv show, etc.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There definitely is all that.

[identity profile] mikhale.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
My reason for not wanting mpreg:

I was traumatized because I once read fics where men were "womanized" while pregnant. It was completely ridiculous. The pregnant man was crying over every little thing and was weakened and submissive.

Something so female just shouldn't be applied to a man. Plus, I know that not all women become weak and submissive when pregnant. In fact, I have never heard of that phenomenon at all.

And I know that the author (a particularly bad one) used mpreg to emphasize the dom/sub part of the relationship. She probably enjoys and fantasizes about it a lot. But it's just not the way it should be.

I'm sure that there are a lot of writers out there who got mpreg right but I'm just scarred from the whole thing. Now, it doesn't matter if the author is someone I know is good. I won't read the mpreg, assbaby or no.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 03:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. I was once traumatized by a mpreg fic so I get where you're coming from. But now I read them by authors I know and/or like.

[identity profile] morgaine22.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I love mpreg.

The idea is so outrageous that you have to go in knowing it's going to be ridiculous. It's CRACK, man. Go with the flow.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel that way most of the time too.

[identity profile] allzugern.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I CAN NOT GET ENOUGH OF THEM. Okay, the badfic sucks, but all badfic sucks. But it is STILL my guilty pleasure to read even the bad!Mpreg fics.

I do, however, have trouble with Mpreg in say QaF fandom, because it just doesn't work, and in RPS it's a pretty hard sell. Still, it can be done, and Seahorse is an excellent example of that. In SPN and HP and anyother fandom where magic, aliens, et. al abound? Yes, yes, yes, please.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
*agrees with a lot of that* I read one that wasn't based on a fantasy type show and just. No. But maybe that was because the writing was HORRID.

[identity profile] douxquemiel.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Puuuuurssonally? I'm not a fan of mpreg in typical situations-- both written and other formats (such as Junior). However, the Cosby Show episode was funny and hilarious and made of WIN. That also gets a pass because it was a dream, and dreams are WEIRD, Y'ALL. Finally, aliens are ALIENS and can therefore do whatever they want.

Basically, if it's science fiction or a whole different universe, then it's fine. If it's just normal people who happen to be pregnant? Noooot so much.

Maybe it's a case by case basis?? I don't know. What's YOUR stance on mpreg?? Assbabies all around? Or is it more subtle than that?

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, okay. That's a good stance to have. *nods* :P

I think it's the visual that bothers me. Because Junior was just creepy, but I don't mind mpreg fiction. It also helps if it's a fandom where it is vaguely reasonable. Like, it makes some amount of sense in Supernatural, but not so much in something like One Tree Hill (I dunno, it was the first thing I thought of. Don't mind me.)

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Yeah, it'd be a bit odd to read about Nathan being pregnant and I'm not sure I'd uh, buy it so to speak but if it was written by an author I liked, I'd probably still give it a chance. Maybe.

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate mpreg fic, I just think it's silly. I've been in fandom for so long I like to think I can read anything, but whenever I come across mpreg it just cannot hold my attention. Probably the same as reading a fic where the main character grows an extra limb or slowly turns purple. Not that interesting in addition to making my skepticism rise.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha. Okay.

[identity profile] getyourguns.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just not my thing. I hate normal preggar bellies though so I think that a man getting pregnant is just as bad, it doesn't necessarily have to do with them being a dude. Just... THERE'S SOMETHING GROWING INSIDE YOU?! For as natural as it is, it seems so... unnatural. D:

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* All right.

[identity profile] thursdaywench.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
i just don't like picturing hot men all fat and preggers. "WHERE'D THE SIX PACK GO??!?!?!" :P

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] 22by7.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
i just want to know the MECHANICS of it
i am not happy or amused if the fic goes into endless detail about everything but fudges about the mechanics
and there are lots more issues and anxieties related to pregnancy and the idea of men being able to have babies that i want to see acknowledgement of.

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-11 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)

I think it's just written Mpreg for me. The images of Sidney Crosby pregnant have scarred me for life.

Oh, dear God. Yeah, that would probably scar me too.

[identity profile] uglyduckling-me.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Having finally caught up with my flist from the past few days...

I don't really mind reading mpreg as long as the author doesn't over-do-it with the hormone thing. I enjoy the really cracktastic fics that have mpreg simply because it's ridiculous and could always be that much more so. But badfic is just bad.
I guess my only problem is the mechanics of it. I just DON'T GET IT! How did the dude get pregnant? Where the crap is that baby growing? Assorted other questions about birthing process? *wtf flaily hands*

Also, I don't particularly enjoy pregnant women in real life, nor do I like infants/newborns/anyone under the age of 5. *shrug*

[identity profile] certainthings.livejournal.com 2008-06-12 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I try not to think about those details when reading mpreg fics because then it'll just hurt my head. *nods* :P

[identity profile] tiffiny.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like reading about pregnancy (male or female) at all as a general rule. If I like the author or it is recced to me, I will read it, but I wouldn't just pick something out with that as a plot point.
