The Man in Black as a young teenage boy? So unbelievably pretty. If the years are kind to that boy he is going to be amazing when he's older.
I kind of need and want fiction between him and Jacob as boys. I mean slashy incesty fiction.
I still don't understand anything.
I still believe/think/feel that Jacob's kind of evil. Just in a different sort of way. I kind of feel that we were meant to see the brothers as good and evil, black and white. But unnamed brother (and what the hell is that about?) left and became, well, human. And sure, that's sometimes evil and bad and other sorts of words in that category but it's also often amazing and wonderful and good. Jacob ... Jacob was more, I don't even know what Jacob was. I want to say robot like but not quite that.
I don't know where I was going with that.
The smoke monster was trapped by the light and Unnamed Brother's body jiggled it free? Does anyone know?

Someone on my FL said that MIB became the smoke monster, citing something he said about "the Devil" robbing him of his body and soul. Also, Smokey tends to take on the personality traits of the people he's impersonating, so ... at that time, he was still more like the unnamed brother.
I do see where they're trying to create a gray area with MIB and Jacob. There is no truly good or truly evil person. The choices we make dictate the sort of life we lead. Which is where I'm certain the flash sideways bits are going, because the characters are working through problems they worked through while they were on the island. With the successor thing, I think MIB's advantage was his curiosity about the world around him, whereas Jacob was content to just stay in his comfortable bubble. Someone who is open to confronting the unknown and using his own will to make a choice is better equipped to guard something as important as the Island.
The woman had to make hard decisions in protection of the Island, with killing the boys mother and then (attempted) MIB himself. Jacob could've never made decisions like that. As it was shown, he was a reactionary person motivated by personal issues. That's why he did what he did with MIB, killing him for killing the mother. It wasn't in the service of the Island but of himself.
As another friend said, it's even more set up for Jack being the one to take over the Island. His actions, for the most part, have always been in the interests of the greater good. He seems to have come to understand how important that is. Even as a doctor, it wasn't about the patients, it was about him. And his issues with his father and his self-confidence that motivated him. His time on the Island has helped him work through it and now he's in the headspace an Island guardian should be in.

ikr? how fucking cute was that kid? jebus! so cute i feel quite uncomfortable with myself, i tell you!
as for what it's all about? i have no idea. jacob seems petty and selfish. MIB seems...well, just plain selfish, but with better reasons. knowledge.
i like knowledge seekers better than i like the faithful.
i'm hoping the knowledge seeking spirit of the MIB became one with THE LIGHT and that's what created the smoke monster.
ya know...i've always thought the smoke monster was mostly good. and jacob was mostly evil.
im very afraid that whatever the answer is, is not going to meet my expectations! :)

I don't think of either brother as good or evil.

I'm not even sure that Jacob is the good one anymore. This show makes my head spin.

But loved the ep lol, I hate that they never ever said his name seriously, wtf?
And I thought the smoke WAS the brother, like his soul or something????
